Smudging 101
We’re adding smudging to our list of self-care and wellness practices. There are many ways that we can take care of ourselves including eating a nutritious diet, skincare, and exercise. Smudging allows us to tend to our energetic selves.
Smudging is a ritual dating back centuries that involves burning dried herbs to cleanse yourself, your space or objects of negative, stagnant energy. Energy tends to stick to things, and it’s wise to conduct spiritual maintenance daily or weekly in order to keep our energy cleansed and balanced. This helps with our moods, physical wellbeing and emotional wellbeing. It can take you from vibrating at a low level, to vibrating higher. Not only does smudging allow us to clear away bad energy, but it also sanitizes bacteria in the air. Research has shown that burning sage can get rid of 94% of bacteria in the air.
The ritual has become a lot more popular recently and if you’d like to try it, you can smudge yourself or your space at any time. We recommend smudging at the start of meditation, manifesting or to begin or end your day. Other times that people like to smudge their space includes when they’ve been around a large group of people, after intense conflict, when they move into a new home/office, or when guests leave the home. You can also conduct a smudging ritual when you feel bogged down, heavy, or have clouded or frantic thoughts.
How to Smudge Yourself
OPEN THE WINDOWS - This RELEASES the energy you’re getting rid of
Gather your sage bundle, a lighter or matches and a heatproof vessel to catch the ashes. Take your sage bundle and light the end of it and blow or gently shake the bundle until you only see smoke, not fire. Our Sage bundles are long-burning so you won’t have to re-light them frequently.
State your intentions confidently. Most people start their ritual by saying a blessing or prayer.
For example: Into this smoke, I release all negative energy that surrounds me, fear, doubt, limiting habits, and stress. I welcome love, peace, and prosperity to come to me with ease.
Once the smoke is thick and steady, wave the bundle over your body from your feet all the way to the top of your head, under your arms, beneath your feet and behind your back. While you’re passing the bundle over your body, visualize negative energy being replaced with positive energy.
Complete your ritual by declaring “Ashe” or “So it is” and express gratitude, thanking the universe for the cleanse. Our sage bundles have “Ashe” written on the back of the tag to solidify your intentions.
How to Smudge Your Space
OPEN THE WINDOWS
Start with step 1 from above.
State your intention to cleanse your space.
For example: I bless this space and cleanse away stagnant, negative energy, and energy that no longer serves my highest good. Pure and positive energy is welcome here.
Wave the smoke in a clockwise motion around your space, making sure to get in the corners of closets and doors.
End with Step 4 from above.
It should be known that smudging your space with Sage acts like wiping the slate clean. ALL of the energy will be removed, so it’s important to welcome back positive, loving and peaceful energy into yourself or your space. You can do this by letting in sunlight, playing soothing or energetic music, burning sweet herbs, or using aromatherapy like candles or room sprays.
